transmediale: a map, a model, a fiction (2023)

transmediale is an annual festival for critical reflection on cultural transformation from a post-digital perspective. For over thirty years, it has been one of the leading international events in the field of digital art and culture. Responding to the festival’s theme of ‘scale’, I curated a series of thematic strands for film works that included eleven short films, four mid-length films, two feature films and a series of live film performances. The programme included twelve premieres, with many of the works created and commissioned specifically for the festival in response to its theme.

The film programme included new works by Vivienne Griffin, Nina Davies, Anna Engelhardt and Mark Cinkevich, Ryan Jeffery and Simon Ripoll Hurrier. Offered German premieres to artists and artist collectives including 업체eobchae, Lex Brown, Sungsil Ryu, Chloé Galibert Laîné and Guillaume Grandjean, and Tekla Aslanishvili. And supported artists in the creation of new works, using the infrastructure of the festival to facilitate the research, development, and production of new film works. For 2023 this manifested as two artist performances from Che Applewhaite, and Hannah Jayanti and Alexander Porter. Alongside, the festival showed. excerpts of works in development from Solveig Qu Suess, Alaa Mansour and Graeme Arnfield. While finally returning to past films that speak so strongly to the festival’s theme such as those by Basma Alsharif and Bahar Noorizadeh.
