Ben Evans James (he/him) is a designer whose research investigates the affective relationship between architecture and filmmaking. Exploring representations of space through the speculative and sensory capacities of film, his research finds output through documentary films, curatorial projects, and written works.

Ben’s work has exhibited at galleries including MoMA (New York) and the Design Museum (London) and screened at film festivals including Visions du Réel (CH), Edinburgh International Film Festival (UK), Sheffield Doc Fest (UK), Athens Film & Video (USA), Dharamshala (IND), Astra (RO), Beldocs (SER) and architectural film festivals including Architecture Film Festival London, Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam and International Architecture Film Festival Barcelona. In 2021, Ben received funding from Mitacs (Canada) and UK Research & Innovation (UK) for his latest film project, Leaks. He is a past recipient of funding from Arts Council England, The Elephant Trust, Northern Bridge, UKRI, Medienboard and Creative Europe.

He is a curator at transmediale in Berlin, the annual festival for art and digital culture, and a co-founder and director of South Kiosk, an artist run space in London. Adjunct to his curatorial role, he has worked as an exhibition architect, designing shows and installations within institutions including Akademie der Künste in Berlin, ACCA in Melbourne, and the Ford Foundation in New York.

Ben is a Senior Lecturer at The Bartlett School of Architecture at UCL in London, and a Deputy Course Director at The School of Communication at Falmouth University in Cornwall. His latest peer-reviewed paper, A Geography of the Screen, can be read here.

He is currently based between Berlin, Germany and Vancouver, Canada on the unceeded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Skwxwú7mesh, and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ Nations.
